Renault is today releasing a little more ballast regarding its future electric R5 E-Tech, particularly regarding its price and its presentation date!
Starlet of the 70s and 80s, the Renault 5, with its reduced size, its five real seats, its transverse engine and its hatchback trunk, was a modern model, if not revolutionary for its time. This distant ancestor of the Clio is preparing to make its comeback, in electric form, and in parallel with the hybrid and thermal Clio, precisely. The project is not new, it was announced in 2021 during the presentation of the Renaulution plan by Luca de Meo, the new boss of the group, who has made the electrification of brands (Renault, Alpine, Dacia) his priority. But what do we already know about it?
Its design is already becoming clearer! The concept of 2021 foreshadowed a modern reinterpretation very faithful to the original model, by its silhouette, its face and the design of its headlights in particular. A few months ago (and in order to continue to actively communicate about it), Renault presented new images, which left no doubt as to this inspiration (photo at the top of the article). A few days ago, more subtly this time, we learned more about its next colors: green, orange and blue (among others), for a deliciously Seventies look! On the mechanical side, this is where the biggest mystery remains: we expect it to receive two blocks, of 125 and 150 horsepower, and a 52 kWh battery, for a range of around 420 kilometers. But none of this has been confirmed yet.
Another question mark: its price! Still in 2021, Renault dangled us with a call rate which would be between 20,000 and 25,000 euros, a future hit for a B segment model! But this summer, the brand’s boss Fabrice Cambolive, in an interview with a German magazine, was counting more on 30,000 euros rather than 20,000. Quite a difference, while Citroën presented its electric ë-C3 at the start of the school year, with 350 kilometers of autonomy, accessible from 23,000 euros.
Finally, and fortunately, Renault has just confirmed what we expected: the R5 E-Tech should start at around 25,000 euros, excluding bonuses! A more reasonable price and already much better adapted to market expectations. Assembled in Douai in the North, we also now know that it will be presented in the fall of 2024, certainly in April. Until then, who knows what additional ballast Renault will release…
