BMW iX5 Hydrogen for French law enforcement

BMW has made two examples of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen available to French law enforcement, which will be used by police and gendarmes for a month.

While the German manufacturer continues its technological tests and demonstrations of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen with a fleet of 100 vehicles put into circulation at the start of the year, BMW Group France has just announced the provision of the French Ministry of the Interior and Overseas two copies of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which will be used for a trial period of a month by Paris Police Headquarters and the Air Transport Gendarmerie at Paris Orly Airport.

“Technological neutrality must encourage the transition to more environmentally friendly modes of travel. Whether for individuals or for institutions that we have supported for a long time, our goal is to work to facilitate the transition to more sustainable mobility. As a manufacturer we also have a role to play in driving change and allowing the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas Territories to preview our innovations in electromobility” declared on this occasion Vincent Salimon, Chairman of the Management Board of BMW Group France.

BMW iX5 Hydrogen: a full-scale experiment

BMW is not its first attempt with French law enforcement: in fact, since 2022, BMW Motorrad France has equipped the National Gendarmerie, the National Police and French Customs. And over the last fifty years, more than 160,000 motorcycles from the German brand have been delivered to authorities in more than 150 countries around the world.

BMW Group France has just provided two examples of its new BMW iX5 Hydrogen to the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas Territories, which is seeking to “green” its vehicle fleet. Both models with a hydrogen fuel cell will be used in testing for a month by the Paris Police Prefecture and the Orly Air Transport Gendarmerie. The objective is to test on a daily basis whether this solution meets the needs of law enforcement in their sometimes extreme daily missions.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is one of the solutions that the brand offers to meet the need for carbon-free mobility, while ensuring rapid refueling and therefore absence of constraint linked to immobilization to recharge a battery electric vehicle.

A popular technology

Hydrogen technology is relevant for traveling long distances, particularly for users who do not have access to an electric charging infrastructure, and who have need for flexibility like the police.

“The main interest for operational departments which do not have sufficient electrical terminals is to be able to refuel very quickly and to have a vehicle availability rate close to 100%. It is nevertheless necessary for hydrogen stations to develop in the region, particularly those with 700 bars of pressure to achieve the best ranges” specifies Mr. Edmond Lanoire, Deputy Director in charge of equipment and logistics within the Directorate of Innovation, Logistics and Technologies at the Paris Police Prefecture.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen also showed itself at ease in the daily life of the gendarmes at Paris Orly airport: “The experiment was particularly appreciated by the soldiers of the BGTA Paris-Orly who saw it on the one hand as a fantastic opportunity but also as recognition for having been chosen for the test. The hydrogen-powered prototype came to complement our fleet of vehicles, which already includes electric and hybrid vehicles, with undeniable qualities including breathtakingly rapid refueling.” underlines Lieutenant Poulard.
