Toyota Corolla Cross: will we see it one day in France?

Will come, will not come? Launched in 2020 and already marketed in several European markets – including Belgium – the Toyota Corolla Cross is playing a mysterious role in its arrival in France, which was originally scheduled to take place in spring 2023.

After the Yaris, In 2020, Toyota equipped its compact Corolla with an SUV variant, called Corolla Cross. First offered in Asia, Africa, the Americas and Japan, it made a sneaky entry into Europe, during 2022. This is the case with our Belgian friends, where it has been offered since the fall of 2022. But what model are we talking about? At 4.46 m long, the Corolla Cross is part of the C-SUV segment. Although it is more demure in terms of style, it shares this segment with the C-HR in the Toyota range. The Corolla Cross, however, stands out in traffic with its XXL grille at the front, and on the sides, the underbody protections and wheel surrounds in black plastic provide a more muscular, more adventurous touch.

A more family-friendly alternative to the C-HR

The interior is modern, without being hi-tech, with relatively uncluttered dashboard furniture where only the air conditioning still has physical controls. The rest inevitably goes through the 10.5-inch central screen which controls a new generation connected multimedia system, capable in particular of receiving updates remotely (“Over the air”). And of course, it is useful to point out that the Japanese SUV is equipped with all the latest innovations in active and passive safety, now brought together under the name T-Mate. Its habitability is correct for family use, without being exceptional, and the trunk is rather generous, failing to offer a flat loading threshold or a repositionable floor. Under the hood, the Corolla Cross debuts a new hybrid enginealready the 5th generation of the system that makes Toyota famous.

For France, or not?

Two versions are offered. One is front-wheel drive, equipped with a 2.0l 171 hp petrol engine coupled to a 113 hp electric motor. The other, with a thermal engine deflated to 152 hp compensated by a second 41 hp electric motor on the rear axle, thereby providing all-wheel drive. Both therefore offer 197 hp combined, transmitted via the eCVT automatic transmission. Seductive, isn’t it, this model? For a time, there was talk, according to official information from the brand, that it would arrive in France from spring 2023.

We’re almost at the dawn of 2024, and no sign of the family SUV. There is a reason for this: Toyota prefers to capitalize on its C-HR sibling, whose the new generation should arrive in dealerships from January 2024. With a sales target of 20,000 units from 2024, the group’s French subsidiary does not hide its ambitions, but seems to fear that the arrival of the Corolla Cross would cannibalize the sales of the new kid. Too bad, we won’t see it on our roads anytime soon…
