Are drivers really more environmentally friendly?

Motorists would be more attentive to their impact on their environment. But is this really the case in practice?

For several years, we have been constantly told that the car is harmful to the environment and that it pollutes, particularly if it is equipped with a thermal engine. This is also why the European Union wants to ban this engine.

Really more attentive?

It wishes to replace it with electric models, deemed cleaner and respectful of the planet. But are drivers receptive to these arguments? To find out, the Korean manufacturer Kia called on the polling institute YouGov to find out. And now the results of this new study have just been published. Two representative samples of German drivers were surveyed in November 2023. Participants in one group have at least a purely electric car in their homes, while those in the other group only have combustion engines (including hybrids). According to the study authors, the answer to the question of whether electric car drivers are actually more environmentally conscious can be answered with a clear and unequivocal “yes”. Indeed, the electrical drivers interviewed also attach more importance to respecting the environment in many areas.

Sensitive drivers

However, everything is not rosy either. And for good reason, they would also fly more often, prefer to buy products made from animal leather and are just as different from drivers of thermal cars when it comes to meat consumption and when it comes to avoiding plastic waste. The study shows that people with the highest incomes are particularly well represented among electric car drivers. Nearly half of those who provided information on their household net income earn more than 4,000 euros per month, compared to only 31% of owners of thermal models. Finally, when asked if they would describe their lifestyle as sustainable, 69% of electric car drivers said yes or “mostly.” Furthermore, 69% of EV drivers say they have purchased at least one second-hand product in the last twelve months, compared to only 53% of combustion engine owners.
