Fuel prices: how much do they cost in foreign countries?

Fuel prices continue to evolve in France and Europe. Here is an update on prices at the start of 2024.

For motorists nearby borders it is possible to go to other European countries in order to benefit a preferential rate. A tip to do lower the budget devoted to his car.

Since the end of 2023, a general decline fuel prices are noted in all countries and Europe. Whereas in the same time, the price of electricity (and therefore of charging) increases. Here is an update on the rates in the stations at the start of 2024.

Why the difference in prices?

What can explain such a difference between the costs of the essence of European countries? The price is set based on 4 criteria.
Firstly, we find the cost of crude oil as well as its refining. The intrinsic cost of oil depends on its quality but also taxes to be paid in the country in which it is extract. We must also not forget margin of the producer.
Next comes refining. This is the moment when we are going to do heat the raw material with the aim of extract bitumen, fuel oil as well as premium fuel.
The price is also linked to the cost of transport decided here by the margin of transport-distribution. This corresponds to the cost of transport of the finished product until a fuel depot.
To this it must be added margin what does the distributor do by reselling fuel to motorists.
Finally, last parameter to consider : the taxes. These vary greatly in function countries. In France, the tax is 60 % of the price of the liter. In short, one liter 2 euros would be sold, without any tax, to 80 cents.

Here is the average fuel price according to the Cargopedia website as of February 1, 2024 for fuel at border countries to France, as well as to Portugal.

France :

  • Essence : 1,79 €
  • Diesel : 1,76 €
  • GPL : 0,98 €
