Smart #1: an “Art Car” in homage to the first Fortwo

Oli-B, the artist, has created an original “Art Car” for Smart, based on their electric crossover #1, which pays homage to the very first Smart released in 1998.

Have you heard of “Art Cars”? This term refers to cars that can be personalized in an artistic way to turn ordinary models into rolling works of art…

A unique artistic technique

The phenomenon originated in the 1960s and 1970s in the United States, where artists, often associated with the hippie movement, began using cars as canvases to express their creativity. These unique creations have become a popular art form, merging the world of automobiles with contemporary art. Notable examples include Janis Joplin’s Porsche 356, John Lennon’s Rolls-Royce Phantom V, and George Harrison’s Austin Mini. Art Cars push the boundaries of traditional art by showcasing works outside of galleries and museums, and in the streets and public spaces, while also being in motion. These vehicles are characterized by their original aesthetic, often colorful and decorated with complex patterns. Artists use various techniques such as acrylic paints or spraying techniques to create intricate effects. Some even incorporate sculptural elements or recycled materials on the bodywork, adding a more “plastic” dimension to their creations…

Smart joins the trend

We have previously featured several Art Cars on Auto Plus, including an Alpine A110 “Metamorphosis” and a multi-colored BMW Series 2 and M3 3.0 CSL. Today, Smart introduces their new Art Car, following in the footsteps of Alpine, BMW, and Porsche. Smart’s new electric crossover displays different liveries in reference to the fundamental elements of the Earth: water, earth, and sky.

This Art Car is a welcome addition, especially as Smart has expanded its electric models in recent months to compete with its rival, Mini.
