In this country, hybrid is much more popular than electric

Despite the popularity of electric cars in the European Union, Japan has not shown much enthusiasm for them. Last year, they only made up 2.2% of registrations in the country, compared to 55% for hybrids!

Car manufacturers are stepping up their development of electric models with EQ at Mercedes-Benz, ID. at Volkswagen, E-Tech at Renault, EV at Kia, and IONIQ at Hyundai.

Electric sales are booming in Europe

Electric cars are a hit in France: they made up 16.8% of registrations last year, compared to 13.3% in 2022. The share of electric cars even exceeded that of diesel, which only accounted for 9.7% of registrations. Across Europe, electric cars now represent 14.6% of registrations, compared to 12.1% in 2022.
The European association of automobile manufacturers, ACEA, reported a substantial increase of 37% in electric car registrations, with market share reaching 14.6% in 2023. However, in Japan, only 2.2% of total car registrations were electric.

The love for hybrids in Japan

Japan remains attached to hybrids, as they purchased more hybrid cars than gasoline cars for the first time in history, with 55% MRP compared to 36% MRP. This preference for hybrids can be attributed to the success of Toyota’s Prius, which launched the first hybrid model in 1997. The country expects 67.1% of hybrid car registrations by 2030, in contrast to Europe’s trend. This is also why many Japanese manufacturers, including Toyota, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi, are slow to expand their range of battery models, as their priority is to sell EVs in the United States and China.
