Soon a new item to have in your car?

A new object will soon become one of the mandatory safety equipment in Spain: zoom in on the V16 emergency lamp, which could well arrive here.

A new safety object on board vehicles

The famous safety triangle will soon be an old memory by car, at least in Spain. It will soon be replaced by a new object: designated by several different names, such as “emergency light”, “flash lamp”, “emergency lamp” or even “distress lamp”, this device complies with the rules V16 approved by the Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), is similar to a rotating beacon.
Easy to use, whether in a car, utility vehicle, truck or motorcycle, it is a small round object a few centimeters wide, equipped with a magnetic base so that you can place it easily and quickly on the roof or body of your vehicle. It is also easy to store, under a seat or in the glove box.
Once placed outside the vehicle in a few seconds, without having to get out of the car, a simple press of a button allows you to emit a flashing orange light, visible from afar (1 kilometer) and 360° in the surrounding area. Thanks to a 9V battery or a rechargeable battery, the emergency lamp can work for 30 minutes, and it is able to withstand bad weather and temperatures between -10°C and +50°C.

The V16 emergency lamp soon to be compulsory in France?

In Spain, motorists can use it in addition to the warning triangle since July 1, 2021, but the days of the latter are numbered. Indeed, on the other side of the Pyrenees, the V16 emergency lamp will be returned mandatory from January 1, 2026 date on which it will replace the safety triangles.
Another obligation will also emerge on this date: V16 emergency lamps must be equipped with a connected beacon which will allow them to communicate with DGT 3.0, a Spanish platform allowing emergency services to geolocate your vehicle in the event of a breakdown or accident.
The V16 emergency lamp will provide better security to motorists: in fact, advance warning triangles are both bulky, impractical and sometimes difficult to use, particularly in cases where it is impossible to leave your vehicle to install a safety triangle more than 30 meters from the scene of the accident. the incident. This is particularly the case during an emergency situation occurring on the motorway.

Even if no announcement to this effect has been made yet, it is a safe bet that this equipment will quickly become the standard within the European Union and that the V16 emergency lamp will be part of the mandatory safety equipment in the near future in France.
