After speculation of a merger with Renault, Stellantis formally denies

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares had hinted at the possibility of a merger with another group, prompting speculation in the media about potential partnerships. General Motors and even the Renault group were mentioned as potential candidates for a merger. However, Stellantis President John Elkann swiftly dismissed these rumors in a press release, stating that the company is fully focused on executing its strategic plan and has no plans to merge with other manufacturers.

Everything starts from Italy

Stellantis’ denial comes in response to reports suggesting a proposed merger between Stellar and Renault under the leadership of the French government, a shareholder of both companies. The French government’s rumored intentions to increase its influence in the European automotive sector were also refuted by Stellantis. The Italian government and Stellantis management have been involved in a public dispute, with accusations of favoritism and insufficient support for the transition to electric vehicles. The Italian government’s announcement of financial incentives for the purchase of less polluting vehicles has further heightened tensions and speculation regarding Stellantis’ future and its relations with the French and Italian governments.

Stellantis between two waters?

In this climate of tension and speculation, the future of Stellantis and its relations with the French and Italian governments remain uncertain. However, it is unlikely that the three main French brands would come under the same umbrella.
