They steal a car, flee the police and break down

Near Saint-Lô (Manche), two young people were arrested and tried after being found broken down in a stolen vehicle.

That’s what we call a missed flight. Last Thursday, January 25, two young individuals were recognized guilty of stealing several cars. The police did not need to take any unnecessary risks during a wild chase because the thieves’ car was… broke down !

The stolen car plays a bad trick on them

At the Coutances court (Manche), the two men were tried in immediate appearance. The day before, they had been arrested by the Saint-Jean-de-Daye gendarmes. It was a resident of Saint-André-de-l’Épine, near Saint-Lô, who raised the alarm when he reported the theft of his car.

The gendarmes quickly began looking for him and did not take long to get your hands on the two thieves, because the vehicle had broken down. Caught red-handed, they had several wallets, checkbooks and bank cards on them. The gendarmes were able to link this theft with that of several other vehiclesin Pont-Hébert, a few days earlier.

They justify their theft by a need to “move”

One of the two suspects admitted the thefts who were accused of them. Quite surrealistically, he managed to “justify” the fact of having stolen the vehicles because he had “need to move”. While he was staying with friends in Saint-Lô, he had to attend a summons to the local mission in Coutances. The second suspect only accompanied himaccording to him.

For several days, the two friends had been looking for open cars and taking valuable items inside. Handbags, wallets… Sometimes even, they left with the car if the key was in the passenger compartment.

The facts with which they are accused do not stop there. They also used stolen checks to make various purchases. Beyond the fact that they drove without a license. The two individuals, aged 23 and 25, are unemployed, without family, and met in Coutances prison, at the end of December 2023. The older of the two has been convicted thirteen times in the past. But he doesn’t seem to have learned his lesson…

The 23-year-old man received 18 months in prison, 9 of which are suspended on probation, and revoked a 6-month suspended sentence. The second took a sentence of 12 months in prison including 6 with a probationary suspensionand a 6-month reprieve is revoked.
