Seat Ibiza: 40 years and 6 million units sold

Launched in 1984, the Seat Ibiza is now celebrating its 40th anniversary: a look back at the history of the Spanish city car with 6 million units sold.

Seat’s best-selling model

Five generations have marked the history of the famous versatile Spanish city car: the Seat Ibiza was launched for the first time in 1984, and quickly became synonymous with success for Martorell’s company. The model is in fact the best-selling of the brand, with more than 6 million copies passed in 40 years.
“Since its launch, the Seat Ibiza has become a benchmark in the market, while paving the way for Seat’s success. The brand has strived to strengthen its position as a global company, delivering vehicles to markets in all corners of the globe declared on this occasion Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Seat: “Today we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the car that won over many generations who saw Seat as a cool and young-minded brand.

Seat Ibiza: five successful generations

In 1993 the second generation of Seat Ibiza was launched, with a more rounded and aerodynamic design. It was equipped with a new platform, giving it compact dimensions while offering more space on board. Under the hood, it received a 2-liter injection gasoline engine, the largest displacement in the segment at the time. The Ibiza II was light, fast, agile and easy to drive, and distinguished itself in rallying in the late 1990s.
The third generation of the Seat Ibiza was born in 2001, at the Bologna Motor Show: it adopted a new design, signed Walter de Silva, and was equipped with the new agile chassis concept, with increased performance thanks to engines of up to 150 horsepower. More than 3.3 million examples have been manufactured over three generations.
In 2008 the Seat Ibiza is renewed with a fourth generation : it adopts the new stylistic direction of the brand, signed Luc Donckerwolke. Its equipment is enriched, including the central airbag, electronic stability control, hill start assistance and tire pressure monitoring. It also adopts the new Volkswagen group platform, with high-performance and efficient engines.

The fifth and current generation of the Ibiza was launched in 2017. Developed in Barcelona on the Volkswagen Group’s new MQB-A0 platform, the Seat Ibiza offers a new level of technology, performance and comfort. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, a special “Anniversary Limited Edition” series will be launched in the first quarter of 2024.
