White is still the favorite color of Europeans

Black is regaining popularity and taking market share mainly from white. The share of colored cars does not change, and remains quite marginal.

Favored neutral colors

Tastes and colors are well known, they cannot be discussed. And in terms of automobiles as for the rest. Although some shades seem to be more popular than others. And European motorists as well as worldwide, prefer classicism when it comes to choosing the color of their new car. BASF, one of the leaders in automotive paints, has just unveiled the figures for the year 2023. A year in line with the previous one, since it is again the white which was popular with European drivers, with a good third of market share. Then come gray, black and silver (which is distinguished from gray). This leads some to say that the automotive landscape is becoming more and more gloomy in terms of colors, since these four shades alone represent more than 75% of cars sold in Europe. Then come blue and red, the only “real” colors to more or less stand out, followed by green, orange, beige and yellow.

A global trend

Trends that are visible globallyOr white adorns 36% of cars, and dominates black (21%), gray (15%) and silver (9%). However, it seems to be in decline since it lost 3% of market share last year, to the benefit of black, up by the same proportion.

Here again blue is the first colored shade represented (8%) ahead of red (4%) and green (2%). Beige, brown, orange, yellow and purple follow with around 1% market share. In terms of particularities by region, note that Asia-Pacific is the only one to see an increase in color diversity. Europe is the region of the world where blue is proportionally most represented, while it is in North America, red is popular. L’South America is where achromatic colors (black, gray, white) have the largest proportion, but also the effect pigments which “give depth to color families” according to BASF.

These trends are ultimately quite logical, and reflect the color charts of automobile manufacturers, where colored shades are increasingly rare in favor of shades of gray and white in particular. These colors are also most often the “free” shades of many models, which can also explain their over-representation.
