SUVs now dominate the European market

SUVs have become the best-selling cars in Europe with a 51% market share in 2023. We will provide you with all the details!

Achieving Remarkable Success

If you’ve been following automotive news, you must have noticed the continuous rise of SUVs in recent years. This trend shows no sign of stopping. The popularity of this vehicle silhouette has led almost all manufacturers, including luxury and sports car brands like Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini, to venture into the SUV market. Even with measures taken against these vehicles, their demand continues to thrive. In the US, SUVs outsell other vehicle categories including pickup trucks and utility vehicles. A similar trend is observed in Europe where SUVs outsold all other categories combined in 2023, as reported by the specialized firm AAA Data. We’ll delve deeper into this topic to provide a comprehensive explanation!

Increasing Sales Numbers

According to data from Automotive News Europe, SUVs and other crossovers accounted for 51% of new vehicle sales, surpassing sedans and other compact vehicles. This reflects a 19% increase in sales compared to the previous year. The popularity of certain models like the Tesla Model Y has contributed to this increase, with its sales in Europe rising by 85% in just one year. Compact SUVs remain the most popular, with 4.1 million sales in Europe. The premium SUV segment witnessed the largest year-on-year increase, with sales rising by 31% to 843,939 units. This undeniable success of raised models has raised concerns among public authorities, prompting the mayor of Paris to take measures to limit their presence in the city.
