Social leasing: it’s already over for 2024!

Social leasing, implemented on January 1, 2024, has already come to an end for this year due to its overwhelming success.

Social leasing was launched by the government on January 1, 2024. However, just over a month later, this practice has come to an end. More than 50,000 requests were recorded, leading the government to terminate it this week. The government is considering setting up a second leasing by 2025.

Victim of his own success

Six weeks after its introduction, social leasing is ending for 2024. Our colleagues at Les Echos report that this is directly from the Elysée. According to Emmanuel Macron’s entourage, the objective of financing 25,000 vehicles was largely exceeded with more than 50,000 orders validated. This is double the planned number and not negligible. The requests even rose to more than 90,000 by the end of January 2024. According to Roland Lescure, Minister of Industry and Energy, the system is a victim of its own success. “It’s going a little faster than we thought. We may have to wait a little before we can offer more models.” Eligible people for this social leasing offer are those with a reference tax income lower than 15,400 euros. Additionally, they must either drive more than 8,000 km per year or live more than 15 km from their work. No initial contribution is requested since the State finances 13,000 euros for each rental.

Another leasing coming soon?

Roland Lescure also hinted at the return of social leasing in the near future, without specifying details. The contract for this social leasing provides for an initial rental of three years. The government wishes to produce more eligible models in France. At the same time, the government must consider the amount of ecological bonus for 2024. It is still not known at the moment whether the aid will be reduced by 1,000 euros or not. The only official information available is that the overall budget allocated to aid such as the bonus or the conversion bonus is 1.5 billion euros. This budget was 1.7 billion in 2023. Therefore, the ecological bonus may move up with the consequences of the success of social leasing, with revised aid on the decline.
