Which manufacturers were the most reliable in 2023?

As is often the case in this type of ranking, Japanese brands shine in terms of reliability. But who takes first place?

Contrary to what one might think with the complexity and electrification of engines, new cars have not lost reliability, quite the contrary!

Cars becoming more and more reliable, especially Lexus

Test-Purchasesan association which aims to inform, defend and represent Belgian consumers, carried out a large survey from March to June 2023. They questioned no less than 30,000 people from 9 different countries and owners of vehicles aged between 6 months and 12 years. And the results of this investigation are now clear: cars are more reliable in 2023 than in 2021, date of their last investigation. And the good news for drivers doesn’t stop there. Obviously, cars are still far from perfect and still break down. But when this happens, these problems are generally better covered by manufacturers’ warranties. If only 43% of breakdowns were repaired at the brands’ expense in 2021, this figure has now risen to 85%! That being said, there are still some cars that encounter (much) fewer problems than others. And in the little game of reliability, it is again and again Lexus which wins the palme d’or as was the case in 2021, but also in 2019. Japanese brands also dominate the top of the ranking since Lexus is followed by Suzuki, Subaru and Toyota. The leading European manufacturer is a little surprise, since it is Cupra who manages to climb to 5e position.

Land Rover and diesels at the bottom of the ranking…

Unfortunately, The last place in the reliability ranking is also not a big surprise. It is in fact occupied by the English all-terrain brand Land Rover. Finally, perhaps it is better not to go on an adventure behind the wheel of one of their models, despite the crossing capabilities of the latter… As for French manufacturers, they don’t shine among the masses either. DS Automobiles is the first brand from France to appear at the 13e place in the ranking. It is followed by Renault which only climbs to 29e place, while Citroën takes 33e place and Peugeot the 34e position out of the 36 entries in the ranking. Not terrible. As for Dacia, the low-cost manufacturer climbs into 16e position. On the other hand, if Japanese brands mainly occupy the top of the ranking in terms of reliability, the model to encounter the fewest problems comes straight from the land of pasta and pizza since it is the current Fiat Panda when equipped with a hybrid engine! Moreover, it is hybrid and 100% electric vehicles that generally achieve the best marks in terms of reliability. On the other hand, diesel cars are the ones that break down most frequently.

In short, if it’s peace of mind that you’re looking for, it’s better to opt for a hybrid Lexus or Fiat Panda rather than a diesel Land Rover…
