Why is car weight a problem?

The weight of cars has been continuously increasing over the years, creating several issues. But what are the reasons behind this trend?

An increasing weight

Over time, cars have been evolving and becoming more technologically advanced. This has led to an increase in size and weight, with a greater emphasis on security requirements. The electrification of cars, through the use of batteries, has also contributed to the increased weight of vehicles. This weight increase poses various challenges. Heavier cars require more force to brake, and larger cars need more powerful braking systems. Furthermore, in the event of an accident, the high weight of a vehicle can increase the risks for the occupants of other vehicles involved. The European safety organization EuroNCAP recently highlighted this issue in its 2022 report. Additionally, excessive weight also has consequences on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The heavier a vehicle is, the more energy it requires to move, therefore canceling out energy efficiency gains achieved through more efficient motors. In conclusion, finding a balance between safety, comfort, and environmental impact is crucial. Manufacturers must find solutions to combine safety, performance, and durability, taking into account the environmental impact, to ensure a bright future for individual mobility.

Higher consumption

Excessive vehicle weight also leads to higher fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Additionally, heavier vehicles consume more brakes and tires, worsening air pollution. Achieving a balance between safety, comfort, and environmental impact is crucial. The increasing weight of cars presents a major challenge to the automobile industry, as it is essential for the future of individual mobility.
