Home charging: how much more do you pay?

Do you have an electric car that you plug in at home? Discover how much more you pay for electricity each month.

A common practice

The future of traditional vehicles is becoming increasingly uncertain, as Europe is firmly committed to cleaner mobility. For instance, the proposed law to ban the sale of combustion cars by 2035 has made significant progress and will come into effect. At the same time, tax incentives and extensive media coverage have contributed to the growing presence of electric cars (EVs) in the auto market. In 2022, they already accounted for nearly 12.1% of new vehicle sales in Europe, a figure that continues to rise. ChargeGuru, a company specializing in charging station installation, recently conducted a comprehensive study to understand the habits of EV users and address key questions about their practicality and costs for individuals. On a daily basis, EV owners generally prefer home charging to power their car battery.

A slight additional cost

In single-phase, the available powers are from 3.7 or 7.4 kW, while in three-phase, they reach 11 or 22 kW. It’s important to note that only the first two options are eligible for state aid (Advenir program), as the other two are still uncommon. On average, EV drivers charge their vehicles at home to travel around 300 km per week. However, some users travel up to 1000 km per week. In terms of costs, daily consumption increases by around 21% compared to a traditional vehicle, resulting in a higher electricity bill. For an average distance of 300 km, this represents a weekly consumption of around 50 kWh (or around 16.7 kWh per 100 km), equating to a monthly cost of between 30 and 40 €. This is a small additional cost that remains well below the price paid for a petrol car, considering the current cost of a fill-up exceeds 50 euros.
