Kia must recall EV6 and Niro EV in US over driveshaft

Kia is recalling 1,243 electric vehicles in the US, including the EV6 and Niro EV, due to the driveshaft. The recall aims to replace defective components to ensure driver safety.

Propulsion problem

Kia has issued a recall for some of its electric vehicles notably the EV6 and Niro EV in the United States, due to a potential problem with the driveshaft, according to a report from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) published on January 31 and relayed by the American media.
The main concern is that these vehicles could be equipped with a driveshaft that has not undergone adequate heat treatment by the supplier, thus increasing the risk of failure under load and leading to possible loss of propulsion. The recall affects a total of 1,243 vehicles in the United States.
For the EV6 (1039 vehicles are recalled), the problem is with the rear inner driveshaft. The affected models were manufactured between January 26, 2023 and April 8, 2023. As for the Niro EV, the 204 units built between June 27 and July 13, 2023 are likely to have a problem with the left front drive shaft.

Free replacement

Authorized service centers will replace defective components at no cost to affected owners. The offending part on the EV6 can be identified by the number 49560-GI000, while on the Niro EV it is part 49500-AO000. This recall aims to ensure driver safety and highlights Kia’s commitment to the quality and reliability of its electric vehicles.
Affected owners are encouraged to contact Kia customer service for more information and have the necessary replacements made as soon as possible.
