On board the new electric Porsche Macan

Porsche intends to push its customers towards electric with this new Macan. Equipped with rear-wheel steering, a range of 600 km and an 800 V electric platform for faster charging, it develops up to 639 hp for 1,130 Nm of torque and accelerates harder than a 911 GT3 RS!

The more time passes, the less it will be possible to buy a model with a sporty connotation, equipped with a thermal engine. We’ll have to make up our minds. Efficient and agile, including diesel, the current Macan has nevertheless enjoyed a successful commercial career without the slightest electrification. Since 2014, it has sold 800,000 copies worldwide. But in France, while it was the brand’s best-seller, it disappeared from the sales statistics as the penalty increased. Today, it is the Cayenne that Porsche sells the most in France, 99% in the plug-in hybrid version to avoid the maximum ecotax (€60,000). With this new generation of Macan, the German manufacturer wants to find customers in a segment where sales potential is greater. And if his family SUV rushes a little into the fog with electric power alone, currently, there is no better solution for Europe. Also, in order to engage its current and potential customers towards an automotive energy transition, Porsche is now betting on the continuity of style while at the same time leading a technological revolution.

L x l x h (m) : 4,78 x 1,94 x 1,62

Faithful to its curves, the 2024 Macan changes proportions a little. Now 4.78 m long, 1.94 m wide and 1.62 m high, it increases its dimensions by almost 6 cm in length and 2 cm in width (its height remains the same). Its grille, closed at the top, draws as much air as possible from the bottom of the shield, in order to cool the electrical technology positioned as close to the ground as possible. By thus lowering the center of gravity, the aim is to limit the impact on road behavior of the presence of the 600 kg of batteries in the chassis.

800 V and 600 km of autonomy

After a first 100% electric experience with the Taycan, Porsche has developed a second 800 V platform, called PPE (Premium Platform Electric). This aims to improve real range and optimize the car’s compatibility with fast charging stations, two concerns often highlighted by first Taycan owners. Featuring a 100 kWh battery (95 kWh useful), the electric Macan claims a range(1) of 613 km (591 km for the Turbo version). It counts on its sophisticated aerodynamics (Cd of 0.25) to reduce its consumption, favored by the installation of active flaps in the shield and by an in-depth study of the design of the rims, the size of which can increase up to 22”.

Porsche is also counting on better energy management of “incoming flows” (battery regeneration) and “outgoing” (power supplied) thanks to new software. This Macan will also be able to accept fast charging power of up to 270 kW, which will allow it, in theory, to go from 10 to 80% battery capacity in 21 minutes. On the other hand, its on-board charger(2) is limited to 11 kW. Enough to refuel at home or in the office. However, many models are now equipped with a charger of up to 22 kW (often optional, of course), to be connected to public terminals.

High performance

The new Macan relies on four-wheel drive (and steering) to put its impressive power and torque to the ground: 408 hp and 650 Nm for the “normal” Macan, then 639 hp and 1,130 Nm for the Turbo livery. Enough to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5s1, or even 3s1 in Turbo. In the latter case, it is 0s1 better than a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, while the Macan Turbo weighs almost 800 kg more (2,280 kg)!
